Understanding race walking

In just a few minutes, I'll explain the subtleties of the discipline, known internationally as Race Walking, to help you appreciate Gabin's technical commitment… and the value of your support!

Race walking: definition & key rules

An Olympic athletics discipline, race walking consists of moving forward as fast as possible while respecting two strict technical constraints that distinguish it from running. It combines speed, endurance and gesture control, under the watchful eyes of judges.

  • Permanent contact : The walker must always keep at least one foot in visual contact with the ground.
  • Straight knee : The supporting leg must remain straight from initial contact with the ground until it passes the vertical position of the body.

"Suspension": why is it discussed?

In photos, an athlete may appear "in the air" with neither foot in contact with the ground. In reality, studies show that a flight time of less than 0.04 seconds is invisible to the human eye. Judges, as guardians of sporting fairness, always rely on their direct observation and must receive the absolute respect of athletes, coaches and spectators, regardless of the situation. In 2025, the RWECS (Race Walking Electronic Control System) is being tested in Spain — a true "VAR for race walking" — using high-precision sensors attached to shoes. Goal: scientifically measure suspension phases, prepare an official threshold and assist judges while maintaining their central role in decisions.
